Study Questions the Benefits of MRI for Breast Cancer Outcomes

A study set to appear in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, believes that the use of MRI’s to determine the degree of early breast cancer in women before surgery, may be more harmful than beneficial.

The study states that MRI testing increases the possibility of aggressive extensive surgery treatments rather than conservative therapy, thereby, negating patient outcomes.

The American and Australian research team suggested “Overall, there is growing evidence that MRI does not improve surgical care, and it could be argued that it has a potentially harmful effect.”

The report appeals for well outlined, nonspecific, controlled clinical trials to study both the potential harm and good of MRI in patients who have been recently diagnosed with early breast cancer, which would include precise assessment of its influence on the patients’ quality of life.
