A major study has concluded that cure and treatment of a heart attack with Plavix can save lives and reduce the chance of a second heart attack or stroke. The recent clinical trial studied the value of Plavix (clopidogrel) in regards to the cure and treatment of a heart attack patient in cardiac care.

However, similar to other osteoporosis treatments already available, the drug (called Lasofoxifene) also raises the risk of blood clots, the researchers discovered. Lasofoxifene, also known as Fabyln, has not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

There have been conflicting reactions to the drug from different experts. Lead study author, Dr. Steven Cummings, professor and director of the San Francisco Coordinating Center at the University of California San Francisco believes that the drug looks good. However, Dr. Carolyn Becker, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine Feb. 25 issue believes that the drug contains “too many unknowns”.

For the study, 8,556 women aged 59 to 80 and diagnosed with osteoporosis took either a daily dose of the prescription drug or a placebo for a duration of five years. Lasofoxifene is classified as a selective estrogen-receptor modulator (SERM), similar to raloxifene (Evista).

Researchers concluded that lasofoxifene “reduces the risk of all fractures (spinal and elsewhere), breast cancer, heart disease and stroke. Breast cancer by more than half, nonspinal fractures by about a quarter, which is similar to what other drugs have done, stroke and heart disease by a quarter to a third.”

Results from the study revealed that a higher dose of 0.5mg a day worked better for patients. Side effects from the drug included, 28 patients developing lung cancer compared to four patients in the placebo group. Also, blood clot risk more than doubled for patients taking lasofoxifene which is a risk found with estrogen and other SERMs.

The most exciting news from the results, according to Cummings, is that “lasofoxifene also prevents the fractures that cause most of the disability”, referring to non-spinal fractures in the hip, upper arm and pelvis. But this effect does not begin until five years after first taking the drug, and the actual risk reductions were small.

Women suffering from osteoporosis should first turn to drugs known as bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, and only consider SERM drugs if they are considered at higher risk.

The study also demonstrated that angiotensin receptor blockers appear to provide a higher level of protection against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in comparison to other high blood pressure and heart disease medication. While dementia and Alzheimer’s disease remain to be complex diseases, researchers have found increasing evidence for three main risk factors: age, genetics and heart disease. In particular, mid-life diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure appear to be related to a higher chance of developing dementia.

Professor Benjamin Wolozin from Boston University School of Medicine, the researcher leading the study, and colleagues analyzed the incidence of dementia in over 800,000 mostly male (98%) subjects in America from 2002 to 2006. Each participant had cardiovascular disease and was over the age of 65 years old. One group of patients used angiotensin receptor blockers, a second group used lisinopril, a drug that helps lower blood pressure, and a third used other comparative drugs generally used for heart disease.

Results show that the group using angiotensin receptor blockers were considerably less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Angiotensin receptor blockers also have an additive effect while used with another type of high blood pressure drug (ACE inhibitors). Patients who were already diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia were less likely to die early or enter nursing homes while taking both prescription medicines.

This research is important to continue because it is the “first to compare both risk of dementia and progression of dementia in users of angiotensin receptor blockers compared with users of a drug from the same class (lisinopril) or users of other drugs prescribed for cardiovascular disease” says Wolozin.

Finding an effective way of preventing dementia is one of the top priorities for public health. However, further study is needed to validate the effectiveness of antihypertensives in general and angiotensin receptor blockers in particular, researchers conclude.

Research, presented in France, introduced the drug flibanserin at a Congress for Sexual Medicine. Fans of this drug, called Flibanserin, have hailed it as the new female Viagra, while critics denounce the sexual side-effects as too minimal.

Researchers who have studied flibanserin have noticed that neurotransmitters in the central nervous system in the female research subjects altered sexual desire in a positive way.

For the study, 1,378 pre-menopausal women were given 100 milligrams of the drug or a placebo during a 6 month period across Europe and North America. The women were asked to record any satisfying sexual events and any absence of sexual desire accompanied by distress by the patient. The women all were in stable relationships and were all diagnosed with hypoactive sexual desire disorder.

After compiling data, researchers found that patients on medication increased their amount of sexually satisfying encounters from 2.8 in the first month to 4.5 in the final month. Patients on the placebo only had an increase of 2.7 to 3.7.

The study also picked up on an improvement in sexual functioning and distress related to sexual issues after taking the drug.

The most commonly reported side-effects included daytime tiredness, dizziness, anxiety and fatigue.

Clinical trials are being continued by Boehringer Ingelheim on the antidepressant drug that coincidently improves sexual desire. There has been no comment as to how long trials may last or if the FDA expects to approve the drug.

The select panel of experts came to the decision after a vote of 12-4 concerning the prescription drug’s benefits. The conclusion supported the idea that Crestor’s positives were much more important than any risk found in patients with healthy cholesterol and no history of heart disease.

If the FDA follows the advice of the panel, the market for Crestor will explode into 6.5 million American patients who thought they did not need cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Research was done comparing patients taking the prescription drug versus patients receiving a placebo. In the study, the amount of heart problems including death, stroke, heart attacks and clogged arteries dropped by 44% for the patients taking Crestor.

Scientists still argue about whether this positive result is from lower cholesterol or C-reactive protein, because the drug decreases the level of both.

Risks of the drug include a 27% higher rate of diabetes for the patients taking the drug. However this side effect is common to all statin drugs and does not override the benefits.
